THOM PASTOR. . .Secretary/Treasurer
Known
throughout the Las Vegas community as a devoted
labor
leader, musician, and Zen Buddhist Priest, Thom joined
the Local in 1974 fresh off a tour of Asia with Englebert
Humperdinck. From 1985-1991 he served as the Union's
Business Agent and in 1991 was elected to the office of
Secretary/Treasurer, a position he has held ever since. For
nearly two decades, he has focused on serving and protecting
the needs of his fellow musicians, as well as upholding the
spirit and humanity of the craft.
His extensive knowledge of labor issues has evolved from
serving on, and contributing to numerous boards over the
years including:

A graduate
of Berklee College of Music, Thom's wide-reaching career credits as a
multi-woodwind instrumentalist makes up a virtual "who's who" list
of Las Vegas performers including: Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Aretha
Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Steve and Edie, Paul Anka, Sergio Mendes, Clint Holmes,
Gladys Knight and the Pips, Bing Crosby, Liberace, Jose Feliciano, Joe Williams,
Harry Belafonte and many more.
He played lead alto with the Si Zentner Orchestra and toured extensively with
Tom Jones. Broadway
credits include: Fiddler on the Roof, Guys and Dolls, Grease (original cast).
Thom is founder and Abbot of the Zen Center of Las Vegas. A master dharma teacher in the Chogye Order of Korean Buddhism, Thom is also the guiding teacher of both the Isthmus Zen Community in Madison, WI and Vancouver, BC Zen Group. He has led retreats in Boston, Los Angeles, Fairbanks, Denver, Pittsburgh, Tallahassee, and Miami. Each semester for twenty years he has taught an Introduction to Zen class at UNLV and continues to do. He was twice honored by invitation to give formal zen lectures in Singapore and in 2010, led a meditation retreat in the jungle of Pengerang, Malaysia.
He is married to former Radio City Rockette and Nevada Ballet Theatre instructor, Viva Reynolds Pastor, they have two children, Tom and Jane.
